Our third Unitarian Universalist principle is acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth in our congregations. We believe that spiritual growth happens everywhere, and especially by building relationships and connections with one another. We provide many opportunities for individual and collective spiritual growth at First UU: Participation in Sunday morning worship; Conversations after service with fairtrade coffee & tea; Adult Education on topics such as: Building Your Own Theology, Meditation Practices around the World, Arts & Spirituality, and other topics; Forums and workshops on issues of justice and concern; Participation in anti-racism work and training.
The First Unitarian Congregational Society in Brooklyn is a welcoming congregation that has been meeting regularly in Brooklyn Heights, NY since 1833, celebrating our 175th anniversary in 2008!
We are a member of the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA), which has a liberal spiritual philosophy that keeps an open mind to the religious questions people have struggled with in all times and places.
We welcome families of all kinds with kids of all ages: we have a vibrant Religious Education program, an active coming of age program for teens and young adults, as well as childcare for the youngest members of our community.
We are also a part of the UUA Welcoming Congregation Program. We welcome bisexual, gay, lesbian, and transgender people to our congregation, to participate fully as a part of our community, our celebrations, and our effort to work for social justice. We also participate in workshops developed by the UUA to reduce prejudice by increasing understanding and acceptance among people of different sexual orientations and gender expressions.
