First U’s Food Justice Ministry: Why We’re Here

As Unitarian Universalists, our principles call us to work for justice, equity and compassion and to respect the interdependent web of existence of which we are all a part. Our choices about what to eat can reflect those values and contribute to creating a more compassionate and balanced world.

  • By eating more local, seasonal, and organic produce, we can reduce the harm we do to the environment and learn about the natural world around us.
  • By making responsible choices at the supermarket or farmer’s market we can support farmworkers and the other people who help bring our food from the fields to our tables.
  • By fighting for a more just and equitable food system, we can help our neighbors in New York City who are hungry or lack access to fresh, healthy food.
  • By reducing our consumption of animal products, we can significantly reduce our environmental impact and show compassion for the living creatures who share the earth with us.

Changing your diet can be daunting–but don’t worry, it’s easier than you think! And the Food Justice Ministry is here to help.
