First Unitarian Moves Closer to Partnership with Housing + Solutions

This past February the Congregation’s Social Justice Committee, Weaving the Fabric of Diversity, hosted an informal information session on a Sunday afternoon following coffee hour, with representatives of a Brooklyn-based supportive housing provider, Housing + Solutions.  At the conclusion of that session, which was well attended, it was agreed among those present that we should move to the next step in building a partnership between FUUB and Housing + Solutions.

Housing + Solutions is a permanent supportive housing residence where formally homeless women veterans reside, often with their young children.  The majority of these women suffer from post-traumatic stress syndrome, resulting from their years as soldiers.  Moreover, a goodly number of them are recovering from the trauma of sexual abuse, and the impact of substance abuse, and, in some cases metal illness.

A partnership between FUUB and Housing + Solutions is envisioned to begin sometime in the fall.  This partnership will primarily consist of a mentoring program, between Housing + Solution’s residents and members of FUUB that would run from ten to twelve weeks, with an additional two weeks of training.

Weaving the Fabric of Diversity will be hosting a planning meeting in late May between senior management of Housing + Solutions and members of the Congregation with objective of laying out a step-by-step plan and timeline to implement this partnership.

Following this plan’s completion, WFD will work with existing church groups to both promote the new Partnership and recruit the needed mentors.  It is expected that WFD will begin this process over the summer months.

Please look for more information both here, in upcoming Orders of Service and at Coffee Hour after Sunday services.
