Naquasia LeGrand

Naquasia LeGrand, the 22-year old KFC worker who has become a rock star of sorts through her work for Fast Food Forward, and Ruth Milkman, a labor scholar and professor at CUNY Graduate Center will be our guests at the initial meeting of the Living Wage Task Force.

Ms. LeGrand appeared on the Steve Colbert show in January, and spoke to the Democratic congressional caucus in Washington recently.  Fast Food Forward has been organizing demonstrations at fast food restaurants across the country. It estimates that their poverty-level wages cost taxpayers $7 billion a year.

Dr. Milkman will explain how society has failed workers over the last 30 years or so. She has published widely on labor issues and has studied the “Occupy” movement.

The goals of the meeting are practical as well as educational. Ms. LeGrand will talk about the momentum gained by Fast Food Forward since it began. Restaurant workers of all kinds face racism, sexism and, generally, a constellation of social problems.  In NYC, 40 per cent are undocumented.

Concrete actions people may take to work towards a living wage will also be discussed at the meeting.  Any questions? Call Nancy Welles (718) 624-0027.  We will meet in the Frances White Room.  All are Welcome.
