Sustainability Work Group Spring Volunteer Opportunities
Saturday, May 3rd, 10:30AM-1:00PM – Community Gardening: Composting at Added Value in Red Hook
Stephanie Gannon is a long-standing member of Added Value, a small community farm in Red Hook that grows produce. Volunteers will have a chance to learn about the composting process, by helping make it happen. RSVP at gannon.stephanie@gmail.com by May 1 if you want to join in. The Red Hook Garden is located at 580 Columbia Street.
Sunday, May 4th 1:30-4:00PM – Community Gardening: Tool Maintenance at Garden of Union in Park Slope
Grab a cup of coffee or tea after worship and head to toward Park Slope to help members at this historic community gardening site clean and inventory their tools. Saturday, May 31, 1:00PM – Environmental movie screening: Bidder 70
Bidder 70, is a documentary about what ordinary people can do to save our planet. The film’s main subject, Tim DeChristopher, is a celebrated UU environmental activist most famous for derailing a government auction of pristine Utah wilderness to oil and fracking interests. Follow DeChristopher as a feisty undergraduate, secretly crashing the moneyed elite’s party; as a charismatic leader, rallying activists with Peaceful Uprising and other environmental groups; as a lover of nature, physically walking through the gorgeous redrock lands he cared so much about saving from fracking; and as a committed citizen, contemplating the stark reality of having to go to prison for his principles, which indeed came to pass.
