Accessibility Program Underway
At the Annual Meeting on May 19, the Congregation approved a program to make our historic building, which is so important to our spiritual and community life, physically more accessible to all of our members and friends.
The first project is underway: installing a telecoil hearing loop in the Chapel, in time for summer worship services. A telecoil is already used with excellent results in the Sanctuary, to transmit the worship service clearly to congregants who use their own hearing aids or one of the telecoil headsets.
Phase I also includes installing a center handrail up the front steps to the Sanctuary, and converting the men’s rest room in the Undercroft into an accessible unisex family rest room. These initiatives are undergoing detailed planning now, for implementation this summer. The cost of Phase I, estimated at $20,000 to $25,000, will be funded entirely by contributions, and through June 4, pledges have already been received from 8 households totaling $6,600. Please add your contribution to make accessibility possible click here to view and download the pledge form.
Phase II will launch in the fall, when the Accessibility Workgroup will recommend to the Board a solution for wheelchair access to the Sanctuary.
The presentation below describes the whole Accessibility program. Please email accessibility@fuub.org with any comments. Or speak to Tom Check, the chair of the Workgroup.
Please contribute generously to this watershed opportunity to make our spiritual and community life accessible to all of our growing Congregation.
